1/25 NOTICE: YOUth Matter will be meeting Wednesday, January 25th, from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm at the Cultural Center. We will be making medicine bags and Ricky Defoe will be doing a cultural teaching. 1/13 13 Moons Agriculture Conference: The Thirteen Moons Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College Extension program held a Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resources Conference and Round Table Session hosted by the Native American Farm Bill Coalition on January 12th and 13th, 2023. The mission of the conference was to share and learn about topics relevant to Tribal Resource Management and Agriculture staff, Tribal Producers, Federal and State Agencies, and Educators. 1/6 Request for Proposals: The Fond du Lac Development Corporation is soliciting proposals from design and constructability outdoor structure companies for a turn-key outdoor classroom project (including pavilion building design, engineering, product submittals, shop drawings, materials & labor installation). There was a Pre-bid for this RFP via Zoom on January 18th. The deadline for submitting a bid was January 25, 2023, at 4:00 pm.
1/4 Child Care and Development Fund Plan: As part of the Tribal Plan preparation process, federal law requires the lead agency, Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, to provide an opportunity for the public to comment on the process of child care services and quality activities under the FDL Tribal Plan before it is submitted to the federal government. The plan was available for viewing until January 13th.

12/22 Housing & Community Needs Assessment Survey: It’s not too late to complete the Housing & Community Needs Assessment household survey! This survey is an important data collection project designed to compile accurate demographic, employment and housing information about FDL community members. The data collected during this survey will be used to enhance local programs and attract funding for housing and other community programs. The survey is closed as of December 31, 2022.

Ham Giveaway Update: Here are the rescheduled dates for the Ham Giveaway;

  • Tuesday, December 20th from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Fond du Lac Band members AND Employees will be able to pick up their holiday hams at the Fond du Lac Head Start Parking Lot. (Please note: This is the last day for Band members that have not picked up their hams yet)
  • Wednesday, December 21st from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Fond du Lac Employees will be able to pick up their holiday hams at the Fond du Lac Head Start Parking Lot.

12/20 Tribal MMIR & MMIW License Plates Event: The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa invites our community to join along with the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa community as we launch Tribal MMIR & MMIW License Plates. We hope to raise awareness of this epidemic of violence against our Indigenous relatives across the state and beyond. The blessing ceremony will occur on December 20th, 2022, at Black Bear Casino Resort, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. A light lunch will be provided. Click here for full details.

12/8 Economic Development Committee Opening: The Fond du Lac Planning Division is looking for applications for one open position on the Economic Development Committee. The Committee reviews and makes recommendations about business proposals, advises the Planning Director on matters and issues affecting Fond du Lac business, and reviews the Fond du Lac Strategic Plan and Community Economic Development strategy. All applications were due by Friday, December 9, 2022.
12/6 2023 Bimaaji'idiwin Producer Training Program: The Bimaaji'idiwin Producer Training Program is for community members of all skill levels that want to grow their own food or start a farming business. 12/5 National Handwashing and Influenza Vaccination Week: This week is National Handwashing Awareness Week and National Influenza Vaccination Week. Handwashing with soap and water is one of the simplest, most effective ways to stop the spread of germs and stay healthy. Also, American Indian/Alaska Native people have had consistently higher rates of severe flu outcomes, including hospitalization and ICU admissions. 11/30 World AIDS Day Event: World AIDS Day is Thursday, December 1st. The Rural AIDS Action Network in Duluth is holding an event from 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm to educate the community about HIV and help you protect yourself, as there is an increase in new HIV infections in the Duluth area. The Fond du Lac Band is soliciting bids from Band members to provide wreaths for Cloquet Elderly, Sawyer Elderly, and Tribal Center. The bid will be for 1 set of 15 wreaths. 11/2 Classes at Na'enimonigamig: Learn to process and preserve your harvest this fall. Join us at Na'enimonigamig for our Saturday Workshop Series from October 8 - November 26. 10/31 Request for Proposals: 210 Facilities Plumbing Improvements. The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa will receive and accept bids for the installation of new domestic water meters to the new water service piping and reconnection to existing domestic water distribution piping at five buildings. The disconnection and removal of the existing above ground well pressure tanks, domestic water storage tanks, fire suppression water storage tanks and associated controls. The deadline for submitting a bid was November 17, 2022, at 11:00 am.
10/28 Fall Youth Netting Weekend: To engage Fond du Lac youth by exposing them to the traditional subsistence practices we are offering a chance for Fond du Lac youth to learn about netting for whitefish and tullibee under 1854 Treaty Rights in the ceded territory. 10/25 Child Care Building Ground Breaking: Today, October 25th at 11:30 a.m., Fond du Lac broke ground for the new Child Care Site on old Fond du Lac Football field located between the Museum and Head Start on Big Lake Road. We asked the community to join us as we start this project. Please park in the Tribal Center Parking Lot. Light refreshments were provided.
10/24 Chronic Wasting Disease Sampling: The Resource Management Division is beginning it’s 2022 surveillance program for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). While there is no evidence the disease is present in wild deer in the 1854 or 1837 Ceded Territories of Minnesota or on the FDL Reservation, this effort is designed to monitor for it as a precaution. Tribal hunters can receive a gift card in exchange for submitting a deer head for sampling. Click here for more information.

10/4 Forestry Center 5K Run/Walk: The U of MN Cloquet Forestry Center is hosting a free 5k run/walk on the evening of Tuesday, October 4th. Registration will open at 5:00 pm at the log pavilion west of the main parking lot at 175 University Rd. Run/walk start time is at 5:30 pm. The route is a gentle forested loop on the west side of University Rd, primarily on natural surface roads/trails. There will likely be a fire going, maybe a food truck, and/or hot drinks. All are welcome!

9/28 FDL Economic Development Committee Opening: The Fond du Lac Planning Division is looking for applications for one open position on the Economic Development Committee. The Fond du Lac Reservation Business Committee recognizes the importance of economic development activities by the Fond du Lac Band as a way to provide business and job opportunities to the community. If interested please submit a letter of interest and a resume. All applications must be turned in by Friday, October 28, 2022.
9/27 Public Notice: The Fond du Lac Office of Water Protection has received a request for a Clean Water Act Section 401 Tribal Water Quality Certification from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - St. Paul District for their proposed Regional General Permits (RGPs). All federal permits and licenses must have this certification before they can be issued on the Fond du Lac Reservation. The USACE - St. Paul District proposes to renew the seven existing RGPs of Minor Discharges; Beach Creation and Nourishment; Transportation; Piers and Docks; Wildlife Ponds; Beach Raking; and Utility. They also propose to issue a new RGP of Bank Stabilization and Habitat Improvement. All of the RGPs propose include General Conditions and limits to the amount of wetland impacts allowed and impacts allowed to waters of the United States. The 30-Day Public Notice lists each Regional General Permit, the activities it allows, limits of water resource impacts allowed, and the type of certification the Office of Water Protection proposes to issue. 9/27 Ojibwe Immersion Academy Winter Weekend Cohort: The twelfth annual Ojibwe Immersion Academy Winter Weekend Cohort will be held November 2022 - April 2023 at the University of Minnesota Cloquet Forestry Center in Cloquet, MN. The Ojibwe Immersion Academy is a rare opportunity for language-learners who are interested in a complete immersion experience to study one-on-one and in small groups with Ojibwe elder first speakers and faculty speakers. Applications were due by 5:00 pm on September 30th, 2022.
9/24 COVID-19 Bivalent Booster Shots Available: Bivalent vaccines are updated booster vaccines that protect against the original strain of COVID-19 and the Omicron variants currently circulating. FDL Human services now has Pfizer Bivalent COVID-19 Booster doses. People age 12 and up are recommended to receive a bivalent booster dose at least 2 months after their final primary series dose or last booster shot. Click here for full details.

9/22 Childhood Vaccine Clinic: Carlton County is holding a Childhood Vaccine Clinic for children in grades K-12. The clinic was held Thursday, September 22 by appointment, between 3 pm to 5:30 pm, at the Carlton County Community Services building. Registration is required by September 21st.

9/21 Public Notice: Fond du Lac Resource Management announces the Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI), based on the Environmental Assessment completed for the FDL Child Care Building. This building is proposed to be constructed adjacent (to the west of) the FDL Head Start Building at 33 University Road in Cloquet. Construction would include the building, parking lot, driveway access, play yard, and storm water basin. The FONSI is available for a 30 day comment period. The Notice of Availability (NOA) contains the contact information on where to send your comments.

9/19 Request for Proposals: FDL Housing was seeking sealed bids for a Residential Renovation project located at 1282 Mission Road, Cloquet, MN 55720. 9/16 FDL Police Department BBQ Canceled: The Annual FDL Police Department BBQ scheduled for Friday, September 16, was canceled due to inclement weather.
9/16 2022 Vehicle Auction: There was a vehicle auction for FDL Band members. Bidding began on Tuesday, September 6, and went through Friday, September 16. Bids were submitted at the Tribal Center front desk.There were other equipment accessories, such as heavy equipment buckets, plows, etc., for bid as well.

9/12 FDL Housing Area Infrastructure Residents: Please be aware as more residents are reconnected to the new Water main with a new water service line, air might be trapped in the service line as you open the tap for water. Please flush the line until the air is out, and the water is clear. The department has tested the water prior to serving residents, and it is free from total coliform and e. Coli; meaning it is safe to consume. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
9/9 Grab and GO! The Band has a surplus of office furniture! From September 6th through the 11th, there was an opportunity for Fond du Lac Band members to come by and grab what they would like. There were three storage containers full of a variety of office furniture such as desks, chairs, and more located in the back parking lot of Black Bear Casino Resort, near the Moorhead Road back entrance. Band members were responsible to haul any items they want and may come at any time.
9/6 NOTICE: The Fond du Lac Office of Water Protection has received an application for a Wetland Activity Permit under the provisions of the FDL Wetlands Protection and Management Ordinance (WPMO) from Enbridge Energy Limited Partnership for the Line 3 Deactivation Program in wetlands on the Fond du Lac Reservation. This project consists of 13 miles of Line 3 pipeline removal, 11 miles of Line 4 pipeline removal, removal of two Line 3 mainline valves and removal of cathodic protection system all on the Fond du Lac Reservation. 8/29 Wisconsin Bull Elk Hunt: A bull elk hunt permit was available to one party of two FDL Band members in 2022. Applications for this permit will be taken from Aug. 23 – Aug. 29 at the Resource Management Division, John A. Smith Memorial Building with a drawing on Tuesday, Aug. 30 if necessary. 8/26 Wild Rice Notice: The harvest of wild rice on Fond du Lac Reservation Lakes will unfortunately be prohibited for 2022. Growing conditions were highly unfavorable this year and the decision was made to rest the On-Reservation wild rice lakes for the season.

8/26 Hotel Items Giveaway: There will be a giveaway of all remaining old hotel items on Friday 8/26/22 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. This will be for all tribal members and reservation wide employees. Some of the items include: Beds, mattresses, lamps, tables, chairs, miscellaneous furniture, tv’s. These items are free and first come, first served. Please use the rear entrance of the old hotel. You must provide your own labor as staff will not be available to help loading. Please be prepared to show employment badge when entering the building. All furniture will be limited to the first floor, all other floors will be off limits.
8/24 Request for Proposals: The Fond du Lac Band Of Lake Superior Chippewa will receive and accept bids ONLY through QuestCDN.com for the construction of Fond du Lac Water System Improvements. The work includes: Approximately 750 lineal feet of 1”, 14 2”, and 6” HDPE water service pipe, 300 ton of Class 5 aggregate base, 150 ton of bituminous 15 patching, and 135 square feet concrete walk of turf restoration. 8/18 FDL Reclamation Celebration: The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa invites you to celebrate the return and protection of Wisconsin Point's Sacred Sites on August 18, 2022 at Black Bear Casino Resort, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Near the Superior entry lighthouse at Wisconsin Point, a stone marker states: “Here was the burial ground of the Fond du Lac Band of Chippewa people dating from the 17th century. It was removed in 1919 to St. Francis cemetery, Superior.” Approximately 180 remains from the most identifiable graves were disinterred, including at least one chief– Chief Joseph Osaugie (1802-1876) and placed in a mass grave near St. Francis Xavier cemetery, on the Nemadji River. We are honoring the generations of proud Anishinaabe people and their tireless work that has set the stage to make this historic signing possible. Click here for further details.

8/16 Cloquet Area Transportation Plan & Hwy 33 Design: The project will work to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety along the Hwy 33 Corridor and hopes to improve connections to Big Lake Road, Pinehurst Park across the river and beyond. Community engagement is very important for this project and MnDot and ARDC are hosting a virtual feedback opportunity for community input.
