Wetland Projects

Several projects have been completed or are currently being conducted on the reservation in regards to wetlands as follows:

Wetland Inventory – An updated version of the National Wetland Inventory (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) has been completed for the reservation. The original inventory was based on aerial photographs taken in 1978 and 1979. The updated version of this inventory is based on 1991 photographs and thus represents changes in roads and development since the original inventory. A map of the updated inventory can be seen in Map 5 – Fond du Lac Wetland Types in the Fond du Lac Wetland Protection and Conservation Plan. If more detailed wetland information is desired you can either go to the National Wetland Inventory Interactive Mapper at www.nwi.fws.gov or contact Richard Gitar, FDL Wetland Specialist. Contact information is at the bottom of the preceeding page.

Fond du Lac Wetland Protection and Conservation Plan – A wetland plan is a document used to identify the resource and to outline ways to protect and conserve that resource in a certain geographic area. In October of 1998, the Fond du Lac Reservation Environmental Program received a grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop a Wetland Protection and Conservation Plan. This Plan was completed on October 4th of 2000 and adopted through Resolution #1343/00 by the Reservation Business Committee on October 17th 2000. The Fond du Lac Wetland Protection and Conservation Plan (FDL-WPCP) can be viewed and downloaded on this website. The Plan includes the title page, table of contents, main text, five maps, five tables, and the resolution.

Index of Biological Integrity for Forested Wetlands – In October of 2000, the Fond du Lac Reservation began developing an Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) for use with forested wetlands on the reservation. An IBI is a tool used to determine the general health of a wetland based on the plants and animals that are found in or are missing from a wetland. This is an on-going project, and there are plans to develop IBIs for Scrub Shrub, Emergent, and Aquatic Bed wetlands on the reservation.
