Although it hasn’t yet been found on the FDL Reservation or in St. Louis or Carlton Counties, it’s probably only a matter of time before it’s found locally. While people are not susceptible to this particular strain, they can carry the virus on their skin or clothing. Wild birds, particularly waterfowl, also are susceptible and can easily transmit the disease via their droppings. Domestic poultry are very susceptible to the disease and band members with backyard flocks of chickens, ducks or turkeys should take care to protect their birds. A link to steps that owners of backyard flocks can take is available here. Other strains of avian influenza have circulated in Minnesota and elsewhere in past years, and its hoped this outbreak will fade away with warmer and drier weather. However, band members with poultry should continue to monitor the situation.
