Medical Waste

Help keep our community safe from possible exposure of disease or injury by carefully storing and disposing of your household infectious waste.

  • Getting rid of dangerous sharp objects and other medical waste is easy if you follow these directions:
  • Please needles, syringes, lancets and other sharp objects in a hard plastic or metal container with a screw-on or tightly secured lid, like a coffee can or a laundry jug.
  • Print out the Household Hazardous Waste “sticker” (click on link below).
  • When they container is full, secure the lid with heavy-duty tape. Place and tape the Household Hazardous Waste “sticker” over the lid.
  • Bring your sealed container to a facility that accepts medical wastes.

Local Disposal Options:

  • Check with your garbage hauler. Some haulers will take your properly prepared    containers to the waste-receiving center for you.
  • WLSSD Hazardous Waste Facility 722-0761
  • Carlton County Hazardous Waste Facility 384-9178
  • The Fond du Lac Human Services Division Min-no-aya-win Clinic 879-1227 or CAIR Clinic 726-1370
  • Persons receiving home nursing services through the FDL HSD Public Health Nursing (PHN) department can give containers to the PHN department staff.

Don’t put sharp objects in anything that will be recycled or returned to the store. This will contaminate the recycling process.

Don’t use glass or clear plastic containers. This could be a temptation for drug abusers.

Keep the sharp objects out of the reach of children

Soiled bandages, disposable sheets and medical gloves should be put in a well-sealed bag before they are put in the garbage with your trash.
