General Summary:
Watercraft inspectors protect Fond du Lac waterways by preventing the transport of aquatic invasive species through interacting with the public including informing boaters and other water users about laws regarding aquatic invasive species transportation, impacts of invasive species, and how to inspect and decontaminate watercraft and other aquatic equipment that could potentially be harboring aquatic invasive species. The watercraft inspectors will also monitor the aquatic and wetland areas surrounding the boat launch areas they are staffing for changes in water quality, vegetation, and/or invertebrates which could indicate a new invasive species infestation.
Position Responsibilities:
- Conduct a verbal survey, physical inspection inventory and watercraft decontaminations when necessary.
- Complete appropriate documentation of surveys, inspections, and decontaminations performed on a daily basis.
- Must attend relevant trainings on invasive species identification and boat inspection and decontamination protocols as directed by the invasive species coordinator.
- Communicate impacts of invasive species on area lakes and cultural and natural resources to Band members and the general public in a respectful and informative manner.
- Work with Band members and general public toward the prevention of the spread of aquatic invasive species through education of identification of invasive species and proper inspection and decontamination procedures.
- Aid in staffing aquatic invasive species informational public outreach events with Fond du Lac and other partnering organizations.
- Participate in terrestrial preventative invasive species events when applicable, including identifying terrestrial invasive species around boat launches and sometimes doubling as an interpreter on popular trails and encouraging visitors to watch out for [harmful] invasive species and to clean their clothes, shoes, and equipment before moving to a different location.
- Advocate for invasive species prevention campaigns such as “PlayCleanGo”, “WorkCleanGo”, and “Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers”.
- Travels between multiple work locations as required or requested.
- Appropriate work attire is required.
- Must attend all mandatory department trainings.
- Ensures confidentiality of financial records and all records for employees and/or clients.
- Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.
- Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.
- Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community.
- Required to maintain proper attendance including reporting to work on time in accordance with applicable policies.
- Maintains a clean and organized work area.
- Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.
Physical Requirements:
- Lifting and carrying of items weighting over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring at least average agility and dexterity.
- Walking over uneven terrain, standing, running, bending, stooping, climbing, pushing and pulling for long periods of time.
- Moderate risks encountered in walking over rough terrain, and the loading, unloading and transportation of invasive species equipment and machinery.
- Risks include snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, hot water burns, and falling and rolling material.
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, including work in adverse weather conditions.
Position Qualifications:
- Knowledge of Ojibwe treaty rights and the incorporation of Ojibwe perspective into invasive species prevention efforts are required.
- Interest and previous knowledge in invasive species identification and prevention, surveillance management, and control techniques is preferred.
- Previous experience in a customer based position in which effective and friendly communication was imperative to the success of the position is preferred.
- Experience in trailering large equipment is preferred.
- Knowledge of several different types of watercraft and equipment including fishing boats, kayaks, canoes, sport craft, jet skis, snorkel and SCUBA gear, and others is preferred.
- Experience in using equipment such as pressure washers and tablets is preferred.
- Available to work a flexible schedule including long days, early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays is required.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.
- Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.
- Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
- Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.
- Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.
- Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.
- Subject to immunization review and submitted proof of required vaccinations.
- Travel is required.
