K-12 School Wide Reading and Math Tutor, Part Time

General Summary:

Ojibwe culture is essential to learning in our community. Culturally responsive teaching is a pedagogy that we use to recognize the guidance that our Ojibwe culture gives us throughout every aspect over our lives. This position assists students enrolled in Kindergarten through twelfth grade in developing reading and math skills. The tutor will also act to enhance self-esteem and confidence in the student through patience and encouragement while promoting a culturally nurturing environment.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assist children in reading, writing, and other literacy-based skills, as well as math, in cooperation with the teaching staff.
  • Provide students with reading and math strategies that will help them be successful in class.
  • Provide students with study skill strategies that will help them study more efficiently.
  • Motivate student to succeed in their endeavors to master grade level standards.
  • Tutor students daily in small group or one-on-one literacy or math sessions. (Goal is to provide at least 5-8 sessions for each student every week for the school year.)
  • Complete a tutor log following each session. Information needs to be as accurate as possible.
  • Instructs pupils in basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district and Minnesota graduation standards.
  • Selects and requisitions books and instructional aides appropriate to the interests and maturity levels of students; maintains required inventory records.
  • Adapts the curriculum to provide individual, small group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual student.
  • Develops instructional plans and organizes tutoring time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration and working time.
  • Encourages students to think independently and express original ideas.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive environment.
  • Communicates in appropriate manner with school staff on student progress.
  • Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
  • Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
  • Manage the tutoring sessions in a manner that assures instruction and learning.
  • Provides a variety of instructional methods to assure that all students receive instruction that is compatible to learning styles.
  • Actively advocate and demonstrate appropriate adult child interactions.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with all staff and community members.
  • Maintains professional standards toward creating confidential relationships with all program participants and staff.
  • Establish and maintain an attractive, safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate environment for the children.
  • Routine classroom cleaning/maintenance to ensure a safe, clean and secure learning environment for all students.
  • Attends all meetings as required.
  • Appropriate work attire is required.
  • Ensures confidentiality of financial records and all records for employees and/or clients.
  • Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.
  • Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.
  • Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community.
  • Required to maintain proper attendance including reporting to work on time in accordance with applicable policies.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  • Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.

  • Normal physical requirements.

Position Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.
  • Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
  • Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.
  • Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.
  • Some travel may be required.
