GLIFWC Birch Bark Gathering Areas

Below are 2018 maps of potential birch bark gathering areas on both the Ottawa and the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forests. These maps may be useful to tribal members interested in collecting birch bark. The areas included in the maps are currently being analyzed, or have recently been analyzed, for vegetation management projects. The Forest Service would like to provide tribal members an opportunity to collect bark on these trees before they are harvested.

Tribal members should not remove bark from trees that are already marked with paint. Birch bark can be collected in these areas in 2018, or until a timber sale contract has been awarded. Once a timber sale contract has been awarded, tribal members would need to get permission from the timber sale purchaser to collect birch bark within the timber sale units.
