“A pretty great man”
Mike Shabaiash was born by Deadfish Lake on the Fond du Lac
Reservation. Before he passed away at about 105
years old (his exact birth date is unknown), he led
an active and remarkable life. He grew up in a lodge like the one pictured
below and currently on display in the museum as part
of the permanent collection. Mike worked from dusk till dawn
at various activities. He gathered manoomin (wild rice) every year, had
a sugar bush near what was Pino’s bay, and made baskets
and other objects made of birch bark. Mike
Shabaiash also worked for the railroad for 29 years, walking from Sawyer
to Carlton and back, a total trip of 30 miles. He and his wife Susan
had 8 children and were married for 62 years until her
passing. Together they led an energetic and happy
life.
