The Prevention and Intervention (P/I) program works with children and youth ages 6 to 17 years and their families to provide education and healthy alternatives to substance use/abuse. The overall program goal is to develop a healthier Indian community by preventing the detrimental family, community and social outcomes associated with substance use/abuse.

Education
The Prevention and Intervention staff are actively involved in the local and tribal schools to provide education to kids about the real life consequences of substance use/abuse. Program staff are able to connect with the youth and they act as role models and mentors.

Options For Kids and Families
Options for Kids and Families is a program for Indian parents and their children to assist them in making better decisions about behaviors that affect their lives. Small group discussions, on drug and alcohol education, improving relationships, decision-making skills, and communication help kids have fun and learn how to use their leisure time more constructively.
Only eight to ten children are accepted into the program at a time. Each contract lasts for twelve weeks and kids contribute to the planning and organizing of how their sessions will be managed. Referrals are accepted from school personnel, social workers, probation officers and parents. This program is offered on the Reservation only.

School Year Recreational Activities
Numerous Prevention and Intervention recreational activities are planned and held with children every week on the Fond du Lac Reservation end in Duluth. Staff and kids have organized activities such as bowling leagues, skiing lessons, roller-skating, attending movies and sporting events. Special groups are organized for kids interested in activities such as beading, drumming and singing, ceramics, birch bark crafts, dancing and dance outfit.
Brief educational presentations are made at the beginning of each session to help kids become more aware of the negative consequences of substance abuse, the power they hold in their own decision-making, the influence they have over their peers, and how to develop a healthy support system.

Summer Recreation Program
Fond du Lac Prevention and Intervention staff organize numerous summer recreational youth activities. Ball games, regular practices and swimming have become part of the regular summer schedule. The Fond du Lac Reservation Summer Lunch Program provides transportation for these activities.
