Asthma Education
A Public Health Nurse has received advanced training and has been certified
as an Asthma Educator. She is available to assist families with children who
have asthma and adults newly diagnosed with reactive airway disease.
Education is provided on medications, self-management techniques and
controlling environmental triggers.
Babysitting
Classes
Classes are offered to youth ages 9 to 16 years of age to learn how to
safely care for young infants and children. Participants will learn basic
childcare, safety, how to change diapers, good nutrition, review basic CPR
and first aid skills.
Bike Safety
Small group classes are offered annually for children on safe biking
habits. Class topics may differ from year to year but will cover biking
basics such as: safety, what to wear, where to ride, how helmets should fit
and hand signals. After completing the course, children will be provided
with a properly fitted bike helmet, if they need one.
Blood Drive
Community Health Representatives (CHRs) coordinate the Min No Aya Win Human
Services Employee Blood Drive. The CHRs recruit up to 40 donors from the
Human Services Department staff. Their commitment guarantees that blood will
be available for patients in our area hospitals.
Car Seat Safety
Car seats are provided at a nominal rate to encourage proper child
restraints. Education to review proper installation in the vehicle, as well
as how to properly secure the child in the car seat is provided to each
person requesting a new car seat. Changes in car seat installation are
often required with different vehicles due to the variety of seat belts now
used in cars. Locking clips may be needed to properly install car seats and
new car seats may be needed if there are recalls or if your car seat has
been in a motor vehicle accident.
Car Seat Program
Child Birth Education
Soon-to-be parents come together in a relaxed and fun setting to learn
about normal pregnancy and delivery practices. Health topics covered during
the classes include: what to do when labor starts, methods to control
discomfort, infant feeding, tours of the hospitals and so on.
CPR
and First Aid
CPR classes are offered to community and staff on the latest life saving
techniques for infants, children and adults. Course will include choking,
CPR, rescue breathing, airway/breathing/circulation (ABCs) and
check/call/care. First Aid is a basic course on bandaging, slings,
head/neck/back immobilization, safety precautions and checking for
injuries. Certifications will be given out after successful completion of
the course.

HIV/AIDS
A Public Health Nursing Staff trained by the American Red Cross offers basic
HIV/AIDS information in community presentations. The goal is to prevent the
spread of HIV/AIDS by educating individuals on how HIV/AIDS is transmitted,
why precautions are important and how to protect them from infection.
Injury
Prevention
Did you know that every 21 seconds someone in the U.S. sustains a brain
injury and those injuries are the leading cause of death for American
Indians ages 1 to 44? The Fond du Lac Injury Prevention Program offers
Injury Prevention services to the community through education and
outreach. The services include: car seat education and installation; Risk
Watch (a comprehensive Injury Prevention curriculum for grades K-12); and
Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), a program offered at the
Ojibwe School to promote safe and healthy lifestyles for middle and high
school students.
Nutrition Education Assistant
The Nutrition Education Assistant will assist families by providing basic
nutrition education, including improving dietary quality, food security,
food safety and shopping behaviors.
Personal Trainer
Certified Personal Trainers help individuals or groups increase their
knowledge of exercise, fitness, and physical health. The Personal Trainers
help clients find a program that fits their needs and activity levels.
Rabies Clinic
A Rabies Clinic is held every two years. The vaccination is effective for
three years. All vaccination information, filed with the Community Health
Representatives (CHRs), is available in case someone is bitten and needs to
know if the animal has been vaccinated.
Tobacco Cessation
Tobacco
Cessation is designed to help you quit smoking through four
one-hour individual sessions. You will learn about the challenges of
quitting tobacco and ways to overcome them, so you can quit for good. The
Tobacco Cessation Educator will use a carbon monoxide Smokerlyzer to
help you see the immediate effects smoking has on your body, as well as the
immediate benefits of quitting. Tobacco cessation aides such as nicotine
patches, wellbutrin, Chantix, acupuncture, herbal remedy and self-hypnosis are available for those who
are eligible. If you are interested in learning if you are eligible for
these services, the Tobacco Cessation Educator can refer you to the
appropriate service provider.
Water Aerobics
A recreational exercise program, designed to accommodate the abilities
of individuals with arthritis and other related diseases, is offered weekly
by Public Health Nursing (PHN) Staff. Each person exercises at his or her
own pace under the guidance of a certified Water Aerobics Instructor.
