Adolescent Care

Arrowhead Juvenile Center
Public Health Nurses provide health check-ups, referrals and assistance for youth incarcerated at this Duluth juvenile facility.


Asthma Education
A Public Health Nurse has received advanced training and has been certified as an Asthma Educator. She is available to assist families with children who have asthma and adults newly diagnosed with reactive airway disease. Education is provided on medications, self-management techniques and controlling environmental triggers.


Babysitting Classes
Classes are offered to youth ages 9 to 16 years of age to learn how to safely care for young infants and children. Participants will learn basic childcare, safety, how to change diapers, good nutrition, review basic CPR and first aid skills.


Bike Safety
Small group classes are offered annually for children on safe biking habits.  Class topics may differ from year to year but will cover biking basics such as: safety, what to wear, where to ride, how helmets should fit and hand signals. After completing the course, children will be provided with a properly fitted bike helmet, if they need one.


Child and Teen Check-ups
The Public Health Nurses work with the medical care providers to provide thorough health check-ups for children birth to 21 years of age. Special emphasis is placed on screening for health concerns and education to prevent health problems.


Family Planning
Education and assistance in finding the right family planning method for the individual client.


Immunizations
Life threatening diseases may be prevented for children and adults by being properly immunized. The Public Health Nursing Department provides information and immunization clinics for all age groups.


Peer Education
Smoking prevention related activities for youth at the Ojibwe School.
