The pregnancy and birth of your child is a very special event. It can also be a difficult and stressful time for many new parents. The Fond du Lac Public Health Nursing Department can help answer questions about your changing body, labor, delivery and newborn care. Your support person is encouraged to be part of this special time. Here is a list of services available to pregnant and new parents:

Pregnant Visits:

During your prenatal visits, your Public Health Nurse will discuss:

  • Normal body changes during pregnancy
  • Nutritional needs during pregnancy
  • Services available in the community during your pregnancy.
  • Healthy choices for you during pregnancy.

Child Birth Education Classes:

During your pregnancy you and your support person can attend Child Birth Education Classes. Class topics include:

  • Preparation for Labor and Delivery
  • Suggestions for dealing with discomforts of pregnancy
  • Your body changes (physical and emotional)
  • Breathing and conditioning exercises to use during labor
  • Relaxation methods
  • Infant and sibling care
  • Videos and open discussion
  • Family Planning (birth control methods and natural family planning)

Postpartum Visits:

Visits with a Public Health Nurse after you deliver are available whether or not you saw a Public Health Nurse during pregnancy. Topics covered include:

  • Normal body changes after pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding support
  • Services available to you and your baby
  • Family Planning and birth control methods best for you
  • Information on infant development, weight and measurement
  • Parenting techniques

Well-Child Services

Public Health Nurses are able to visit at regularly scheduled appointments that are convenient for you and your baby’s needs. Topics covered during this visit include:

  • Baby’s height, weight and development
  • Feeding your baby (breastfeeding, bottles, starting solids)
  • Sleep habits
  • How to play with your baby and activities to stimulate development
  • Services available for you and your baby
