Title: Invasive Species Seasonal Aide, Full Time
Location: FDL Resource Management
Supervisor: Invasive Species Coordinator
Closing Date: April 3, 2023
Rate of Pay: $15.00 per hour

General Summary:

Invasive species seasonal aides will help with terrestrial and aquatic invasive species activities on and around the Fond du Lac Reservation to the benefit of Fond du Lac Band members. This can include management activities such as surveillance, control, prevention, and education and outreach projects for both aquatic and terrestrial invasive species.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Participate in control projects including mowing, hand pulling, and other treatments for invasive species to include but not limited to wild parsnip, spotted knapweed, tansy, thistle species, buckthorn, honeysuckle and others.
  • Conduct invasive species early detection surveys for, emerald ash borer, rusty crayfish, spiny water flea, Chinese mystery snail, starry stonewort, wild parsnip, Japanese knotweed, spotted knapweed, common tansy, and others.
  • Conduct watercraft inspections and decontaminations when needed.
  • Complete appropriate documentation of surveys, control work, inspections, and decontaminations performed on a daily basis.
  • Adheres to safety protocols.
  • Must attend relevant trainings on invasive species identification and control method trainings as directed by the invasive species coordinator.
  • Work with Band members, staff, and general public toward the prevention of the spread of aquatic invasive species through education of identification of invasive species and proper inspection and decontamination procedures.
  • Aid in staffing aquatic invasive species informational public outreach events with Fond du Lac and other partnering organizations.
  • Advocate for invasive species prevention campaigns such as “PlayCleanGo”, “WorkCleanGo”, and “Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers”.
  • Travels between multiple work locations as required or requested.
  • Appropriate work attire is required.
  • Must attend all mandatory department trainings.
  • Ensures confidentiality of financial records and all records for employees and/or clients.
  • Displays a responsive and professional manner in promptly responding to all requests, complaints, and problems.
  • Recognizes that each employee is a representative of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and is responsible for demonstrating courtesy, respect, and sensitivity to the needs of all others, including visitors and co-workers.
  • Represents the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the department in a positive and professional manner in the community.
  • Required to maintain proper attendance including reporting to work on time in accordance with applicable policies.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  • Due to changes and modifications in the job from time to time, employees are required to be flexible and assume other responsibilities assigned by management as deemed necessary.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting and carrying of items weighting over 50 pounds and shared lifting and carrying of heavier items, and similar strenuous activities requiring at least average agility and dexterity.
  • Walking over uneven terrain, standing, running, bending, stooping, climbing, pushing and pulling for long periods of time.
  • Prolonged walking, standing, bending, climbing, pushing, pulling, and holding heavy objects are required.
  • Moderate risks encountered in walking over rough terrain, and the loading, unloading and transportation of invasive species equipment and machinery.
  • Risks include snake or insect bites and stings, exposure to excessive machinery noise, hot water burns, herbicide exposure, and falling and rolling material.
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, including work in adverse weather conditions.

Position Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of MN invasive species laws and Fond du Lac invasive species ordinance(s) is required.
  • Ability to read property maps and communicate with private property owners and Band members about work being completed is required.
  • Ability to communicate and discuss invasive species laws, best management practices, and management techniques with homeowners, state, federal, and county stakeholders when appropriate is required.
  • Knowledge of Ojibwe treaty rights and the incorporation of Ojibwe perspective into invasive species prevention efforts are required.
  • Interest and previous knowledge in invasive species identification and prevention, surveillance management, and control techniques is preferred.
  • Experience in trailering large equipment is preferred.
  • Experience in using equipment such as pressure washers, chainsaws, and hand tools are preferred.
  • Experience in correct herbicide usage around sensitive natural resource areas or culturally sensitive areas are preferred.
  • Ability to operate a digital camera, GPS unit, binoculars, cellular phone and compass is preferred.
  • Available to work a flexible schedule including long days, early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing is required.
  • Ability to work independently and establish priorities is required.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
  • Ability to establish professional and harmonious working relationships on all projects and with all parties involved.
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing in accordance with the Fond du Lac Reservation’s Personnel Policies.
  • Subject to pre-employment and annual background checks.
  • Subject to immunization review and submitted proof of required vaccinations.
  • Travel is required
