As the English teacher at the Ojibwe School I believe my job is not only to teach students the reading and writing skills they will need to succeed, but to encourage reading for enjoyment. I want my students to love reading. One way I accomplish this is to use novels instead of the big, heavy textbooks that we are accustomed to. I choose the novels based on many criteria including: appeal to students, literary standards, and the message of the story. I want the content of each novel to connect with students’ lives and motivate them to keep reading. With this said, some of the novel’s contain language and events that may or may not be appropriate for your student. If you are concerned with any of the content you are encouraged to call me or stop by the school to discuss this matter. Alternate material may be assigned to your student if you so decide.
