Boozhoo Parents! The testing frenzy has finally slowed down. Thank you
for encouraging your student to take their time and do their best.
Students were extremely well-behaved and cooperative in taking their
tests. Juniors who have not passed the reading test will have a chance to
retake the test on May 6th. As the year winds down students will be
finishing novels, writing final essays, and studying parts of
speech/grammar. As always, if you have questions or concerns please call
or stop by.

Science
May 2009
Physical Science
This class has had a really successful year. The students in 9th grade
physical science have learned and worked with some pretty tough concepts
and have done a very nice job. For the rest of the year, we are going to
be finishing our unit on matter. We will study radioactive elements,
isotopes and move on to reactions.
Earth Science
The 8th graders are working on fossils and geologic time scales. We
have been learning how fossils are made and classified. We will then study
the geologic time scale.
Biology
This month we will be studying a small unit of anatomy and physiology.
We will start with some of the basic systems of the body, their structure
and function.
11th Grade Forensics
In 11th grade science, we wrapped up our study of environmental science
and the class voted to spend the last quarter learning about forensics.
There is a lot to learn to be a forensics specialist. First you need to
decide which branch of forensics you like best: police work, ballistics,
metallurgy, DNA, microbiology, hematology, anthropology, dentistry, and
the list can go on and on. We will first take a look at how observant we
think we are and then we will spend some time reviewing DNA and genetics.
We will be learning how to identify finger prints, blood types, blood
spatters, what maggots can tell us and some other major aspects of crime
scene identification. It won’t be like C.S.I., but it should be
interesting.
Science club for next year
Next year I will be starting a science club for grades 5-12. We will be
working on a couple of different projects: science fair, recycling and
composting with worms. If anyone in grades 5-12 is interested in helping
our school to become really green – this club is for you. Also if you want
to compete in the yearly science fair this club is also for you. If you
have any questions you can contact me at extension 1424 at 878-7551.

learn the process of making nets and possibly spears. April is a very busy
harvesting month, please encourage your children to keep up with their
school work.

Our High School Quiz Bowl team will be participating in the Ojibwe
Jeopardy game in Detroit Lakes on March 6th 2009. This will be an
overnight for four of our high school students. Our careers class went to
visit North East Regional Correctional Facility on the 13th of February.
It was very informational. We had a great time learning and seeing first
hand what goes on and what type of jobs are required to run that facility.
Miigwech to Cheryl Harder for the great tour. The eighth graders are
working on a Mishomis Book project this week. We will begin to read
chapter six next week. The ninth and tenth grade did an awesome job on
their Ojibwe Language Books. We are back working through the Ojibwemowin
Series I Book on chapter 11. Also, we will be starting to work on
Iskigamizige words and attending to the sugar bush. Ziigwan is near!

BOOZHOO/AHNEEN;
Health at Fond du Lac Ojibwe School (FDLOJS). The fourth quarter
has started and the 7th grade is taking health classes at the last hour of
each day. Students have been orientated to health class and their duties
and responsibilities; the seven teachings are applied during class time;
to be on time; to complete all assignments within the prescribed time due;
to teach others about what being healthy means; to ask questions and
request what field trips are available for them to go on; and most of be
kind to themselves and others.
The topics to be covered this quarter are:
Alcohol and other drugs; Self esteem; Anishinabeg values taught during
class time; personal health; HIV and AIDS; Puberty issues; computer
research methods for health topics; and to learn what “learned behaviors”
are.
These are just some of the items that are and come out during teaching
health to Anishinabe students.
We are looking into to a tour of the St. Luke Hospital, this tour has
been done before and has proven to be successful with the students.
Public Health Nurses and community services personnel are to conduct
presentations to the health class. So I would like to thank them now for
their expertise and interest in FDLOJS students and their health issues.
Parents/Guardians are encouraged to come in and visit.
